TECTONIC FRAGMENTS: Explorations of Past, Present, and Possible Futures of the Centennial Mill

ARCH 585 is the Design Thesis for the Graduate School of Architecture and represents a full year of research conducted individually on a singular subject culminating in a design exploration of the subject toward the fulfillment of the requirements toward a Master of Architecture. My thesis centers on the relationship between our perception of entropy – the forces of nature that lead to increasing disorder in all matter – and that of material reuse in the built environment. The research seeks to address the question: how might a shift in attitude toward appreciation of the qualities of aging of material contribute to a design ethic that favors material reuse over raw material extraction?

MANUFACTURING AUTHENTIC SPACE: Embodying the Technological Systems that Determine Contemporary Life

Traditionally, in the study of Architecture we are taught to consider aspects of the human body, the site, the community, material choices, and our experience. It is, however, also situated within other contexts, intangible, yet just as substantial as those we can touch. This thesis focuses on five modules which function to materialize the virtual systems that constrain our design, limit its relevance, and alienate us. Compressed into bite-sized umwelten and mediated with the same technologies we often accuse of deceiving us, the five modules offer a different perspective on how we can approach architecture in a quest to uncover the authentic.
