Maurice Cox, a distinguished figure in architecture and urban planning, holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from The Cooper Union and has earned accolades such as being named one of the "most admired design educators in America" by Design Intelligence. Recently, has been honored as the 2024 laureate of the Henry Hope Reed Award at the University of Notre Dame, recognizing his tireless efforts to address social and economic inequities through informed policy and design. With a rich academic background, including professorial roles at esteemed institutions like Syracuse University and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Cox brings a wealth of expertise to his endeavors.In addition to his academic career, Cox has held notable public service roles, including serving as the mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia, and as the design director of the National Endowment for the Arts under both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. His tenure as an elected official and his leadership in urban planning have been marked by innovative community engagement strategies and successful urban revitalization initiatives.

 

As the Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) for The Cooper Union, appointed by Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot, Cox has made significant contributions to urban development. Tasked with leading economic development, planning, and zoning efforts in Chicago, he has shown his dedication to fostering community-improvement initiatives and advancing equitable redevelopment strategies, drawing on his multifaceted background in architecture, design, and politics.
