CSI Portland JEDI Award
We are pleased to officially announce the 2021 recipients!
The CSI Portland JEDI Award
honors individuals, companies and organizations in the Portland AEC community
for their valuable contributions to JEDI initiatives.
The inaugural JEDI Award is presented to the PSU student cofounders of NOMA PDX for your
outstanding initiative and resolve in founding and chartering
the NOMA PDX chapter in Portland, Oregon in 2020.
Presented to:
Yanet Orozco Gomez
Nancy Pelayo-Colores
Ana Yocum
Thank you for advocating, leading the way, and reflecting the principles of
Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
through your actions.
This award was presented by CSI Portland President, Alexander Lungershausen, to Nancy and Ana on August 17th at the CSI Awards dinner, following the golf tournament at Stone Creek Golf Course. Yanet was unable to attend; Chandra Robinson and Han Mei Chang joined to support their fellow NOMA board members.
The JEDI committee strives to recognize people who are walking the walk and taking actionable steps to make a difference. It was evident to our committee that these three recipients took big steps outside of their comfort zone to create a lasting change, which is already creating ripples. The process of establishing a formal chapter of any group is something to be recognized and for those who know the history of Oregon, the need for a NOMA presence here is long overdue and greatly appreciated by many.
By working to create the NOMA PDX chapter, these three made a choice to dive head on into activism and helped to form a new community for BIPOC designers and allies in Portland. We see you making a difference and we thank you for your hard work, and for stepping up to fill a need.
NOMA PDX recently participated with the NOMA West Region in a Project Pipeline 2-day virtual camp for 11-14 year olds. The region chapters participating included NOMA Arizona, NOMA Colorado, NOMA NW (Seattle), SD NOMA, NOMA San Francisco, NOMA SoCal, and NOMA PDX. Students were mailed a t-shirt, curriculum, and supplies, and were guided via Zoom and Miro through selecting sites, providing potential solutions to environmental and social justice issues, and designing a dream house.
The CSI Portland JEDI committee provided help with the NOMA PDX funding for Project Pipeline, and JEDI secretary Melody Stinson was on the PDX camp planning committee, as well as serving as a room lead volunteer for the camp days. The JEDI committee is excited to continue to develop our relationship with, and support for, NOMA PDX as the chapter grows! Allies are encouraged to join NOMA PDX and work toward a more diverse future of architecture.
Thank you to Ana Yocum, Nancy Pelayo-Colores, and Yanet Orozco Gomez in addition to the other NOMA PDX cofounders and board members for making things happen to improve the AEC community in Portland, OR!
